We are thrilled to announce our partnership with renowned English interior and textile designer, Cressida Bell to launch a collection that pushes the boundaries of cement tile design. The inaugural Cressida Bell Collection includes eight patterns, each with three to four colorways.
Designed for the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Bell drew inspiration directly from English artist Walter Crane, primarily known for his illustrations for children’s books which often featured flying birds.
Bell originally created this “artichoke” pattern exclusively for the cover artwork of Arabella Boxer’s Book of English Food: A Rediscovery of British Food From Before the War.
Bell cites crosshatch as one of her favorite motifs, which she uses time and again in her work. She thinks this pattern will provide a classic look and feel to any space.
Inspired by Bell’s bathroom tiles (painted by her father, Quentin Bell) incorporating mermaids and fishes. Initially, Fish Pond was a furnishing fabric used for cushions and is now also a greetings card.
This was initially a design for a scarf with bunches of tulips arranged in a fish-scale pattern which easily translated into a tile of a similar shape.
Inspired by her international travels, Bell initially designed this fun, geometric pattern for her hand-printed silk scarf collection.
Originally created for Bell’s client who wanted outdoor furniture with a garden-themed patterned fabric.
This pattern was initially produced as a fabric for menswear designer Richard James and draws inspiration from an interior at ‘Charleston’ — the house that was a gathering point for the Bloomsbury Group. It is now featured on Bell’s lamps and shades.
The color combinations and patterns in the collection span from strikingly contemporary to classic, and each is an artful study of color and composition.
Rick Bayless, the celebrity chef and host of the Emmy-nominated show “Mexico: One Plate At A Time” on PBS, has developed the menu at Red O Restaurant (think red onion) at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, CA. This is Red O’s second location, the first being in Los Angeles. Another location in St. Monica will be opening soon. Red O restaurant features a dramatic interior paired with high-end Mexican food. Designer Martin Lawrence Bullard chose Villa Lagoon Tile’s “Castle” pattern cement tile for much of the floor. The tile was made in Mexico so it was a fitting combination. Rumor has it that the food is really special and we wished we lived closer!
People often ask us if our tile is suitable for commercial spaces. Cement tile is WONDERFUL in commercial spaces as it often brings “heart & soul” to an interior, and with proper sealants, the constant foot traffic should be no problem.
Our friend Adam Esparza at ALE Tile created this short video that outlines a few of the reasons why cement tile is such a great material to use in high-traffic hospitality spaces.
As you can see from Adam’s demonstration, cement tiles are made with a thick layer of pigment that is made to last! No printed-on color here. Learn more about the benefits of cement tile for your projects at www.villalagoontile.com.
In historic cement tile floors one sees many variations of colors formed using iron oxide and a few other simple natural earth pigments. These old tile floors have a rich but often deep color range. Now with earth-wide connectivity and speedy transportation of goods from country to country, we are able to find pigments to create just about any cement tile color needed by a designer or architect.
We are in love with these gorgeous new shades that we have added to our cement tile standard palette.
These super saturated cement tile colors would have been impossible just a few years back. Disney wanted some vivid colors for a special project in Hong Kong. We got busy and came up with just what their designers needed for a bright, fun floor in a Disney hotel restaurant. It is still under construction, but we know we will have finished project photos in a few months. The floor will amaze you.
Shown here: Sunshine SB-9000, Cherry Red SB-9001, Violeta SB-9002
If your project calls for new or unusual colors, just ask, there is a really good chance we can achieve your desired hues just as we did for this special Disney job.

Owner/ designer Joshua Zad came back to us once more for the perfect tile for his vision for Alfred Tea Room.
Designer Melissa Adams at Villa Lagoon Tile came up with this soothing, fun fantasy vine exclusively for Villa Lagoon Tile and it is a lovely compliment to the pink decor in the new Alfred Tea Room.
Stop in for a refreshing sip and let them know that you noticed the tile :o)
Not so long ago Dave and I were passing through the PARIS CHARLES DE GAULLE airport and immediately upon disembarking the airplane, we were walking over colorful cement tiles in the concourse. Now, where in the world is there more foot traffic than a big international airport ? And these tiles look really good considering all the suitcases and strollers rolling over them daily.
These energetic abstract patterns were a delight after a long airplane flight. We think the cement tile installation in Paris’ Charles DeGaulle Airport in Paris are a testament to the durability of well made cement tiles.
One of our most fun projects was making the many patterns of tile that Philippe Stark called for in his design for the SLS Vegas hotel pool area. The project consisted of 2 large ‘rug like’ areas of a patchwork of pattern with a solid color Black tile border around each. This was not our first Phillipe Stark project but it was the largest. We also made cement tile for YOO Panama.
The pool bar at the Las Vegas SLS Hotel is called FOXTAILS.
Quite a bit of organization was required by us, our tile workshop and the installers. The contractor was Ferraro Marble of Las Vegas and they were great to work with.
While many of the patterns were traditional designs for which we already had the molds, there were some that we had to make from scratch. The project required many pre-order samples going back and forth as most large commercial jobs do. Once they saw the quality of our tiles and that we were able to tackle this complicated order, everyone was ‘on board’ and the fun began.
Our factory used color coded sticky tape on the tile boxes to assist Ferraro Marble in identifying which tile was in which box. Even with that help, we know it was a real challenge to follow the designer’s layout exactly.
We also provided the black and white tile used in a chevron pattern on the DANCE FLOOR in the nightclub in the hotel. So many delightful patterns can be created with solid color tiles. We think this is an option seldom explored by many designers. The potential for plaids and large scale repeating or non-repeating patterns is limitless.
In keeping with the B&W theme throughout the SLS Vegas, the Sundries shop has our black and white cement tile.
One thing is for sure, Villa Lagoon Tile’s Custom Patchwork at the SLS Vegas is the perfect setting for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Models !!
Villa Lagoon Tile’s angular patterns “Tugboat” & “Man Overboard” (Named after the Nautical flags they represent) create a lively floor in the newL’Amico NYC, a new restaurant from well known chef Laurent Tourondel in the Eventi Hotel. He is serving an Italian-influenced menu in a chic semi-rustic setting. We spotted a photo and a tantalizing description of the good eats in Architectural Digest.
When renovations were done at Turnberry Isle Resort Club our hexagonal cement tiles were chosen for the lively inside-outside CORSAIR Restaurant / Bar over seen by noted chef Scott Contan.
Corsair offers a seasonal and rustic menu of American and Mediterranean dishes. The menu changes based on what can be gotten locally.
The décor, featuring Villa Lagoon Tile’s hand crafted “Halo” hexagonal encaustic cement tile, and menu offerings are united through a sense of understated sophistication.
The restaurant has a scenic outdoor terrace which provides an ideal place for guests to enjoy picturesque views, the splash of the cooling waterfall and the diverse tropical vegetation and, of course, the resort’s acclaimed golf course.
“Find Scott Conant’s hearty, farmhouse-style cooking in a polished, handsome setting.” The Miami Herald
“With CORSAIR, Conant again shows why he’s among the city’s best pasta makers.” Miami New Times
“One of the 10 Hottest New Restaurants in Miami.” Zagat Miami
Turnberry Resort is in the Aventura Miami area and is a luxury Miami hotel, golf course, and club with a private beach.
When Boston’s Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel did a huge renovation of the 100 year old Oak Room, we were happy to have our custom cement tile be a part of the new decor by Powerstrip. Using an historic pattern and brilliant colors, the designers used a Villa Lagoon Tile cement tile in a well known Cuban pattern which coordinates beautifully with the richly paneled room decor.
The Oak Room dining room has been open and serving for over 100 years. Decades of renovations had slowly stripped any actual oak wood from the restaurant and bar space. Further major changes had removed a Merry-Go-Round Bar that was installed during Prohibition and remained until the 1970’s.
Powerstrip’s redesign seamlessly merges the original Beaux-Arts love of bold wall paneling with a contemporary architectural language and finish. The copper bar (the longest in North America) is emblazoned, “We serve the Nation.” Now a sophisticated spot in the Fairmont for farm-to-table American eats, craft drinks & hobnobbing.
Interestingly the designers chose to lay this tile in a different way than the usual of each tile rotated 90 degrees. Here they rotated every other tile 90 degrees and laid them in rows which creates a zig-zag chevron effect.

VIDEO: Watch the transformation in action below…the VLT tile goes in at about 38 seconds marker. Note how they protected the freshly laid tile from the other trades once it was laid. This is one key to a good outcome.
Let us provide custom encaustic cement tile for your next renovation or new build and help elevate your design into the WOW! category.
